Safeguarding

08 May 2026

https://schoop.co.uk/UploadFiles/6984/safeguarding-policy---children-.pdf

Dear Parent/Carer,

As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping children safe and ensuring they understand how to seek help and support, we are sending home a copy of our Child-Friendly Safeguarding Policy.

This version of the policy has been written in a way that is accessible and easy for children to understand. It explains how we help keep children safe in school, who they can talk to if they are worried, and the support available to them.

The policy is also available on our school website and is displayed around school so that children can access it whenever needed.

As classes are currently taking part in the Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) topic “Changing Me”, we felt this would be a valuable opportunity to revisit the safeguarding policy with children and help remind them of the trusted adults and support systems available both in and out of school.

We encourage you to take some time to read through the policy with your child and discuss any questions they may have.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us promote a safe and supportive environment for all children.

Kind regards,
Mrs North

Dear Grown-ups,
We have been waiting to use the mud slide in the forest all term. As it was the last one this term, we have spent the afternoon slipping, sliding and laughing out loud. Great team work and cooperation helping each other to climb and stay on their feet too! It was like the Winter Olympics - ice skating on the mud!
All this fun of course comes with muddy clothing! Waterproofs and coats are coming home for a spin in the washing machine tonight please. We will keep our wellies in school until Friday.
Thank you grown - ups for doing our washing!

Welcome back to Year 4

09 Jan 2026

At the start of the new term, pupils took part in a short introductory activity designed to support reflection, wellbeing, and a positive start to learning.

As part of this, we used a simple “Skittles” word game, where pupils selected a coloured sweet, with each colour linked to a prompt related to dreams, goals, strengths, gratitude, or wellbeing. Pupils were invited to share thoughts such as something they are proud of, a goal they would like to work towards, or something that supports their wellbeing. Sharing was entirely voluntary and pupils were encouraged to contribute only what they felt comfortable with.

The activity aimed to:

  • Encourage positive self-reflection and self-awareness

  • Promote emotional wellbeing and confidence

  • Help pupils think about their goals and aspirations for the term ahead

  • Foster a supportive and respectful classroom environment

The session was light-hearted and helped pupils settle into the new term in a positive and thoughtful way.

Absence

09 Jan 2026

Please can I remind that if your child is late to or absent from school you need to let the school know the circumstances surrounded their absence or lateness.
Inline with our Absence Policy the school has a range of responsibilities in respect of attendance.
The school will undertake first day calling every day for a learner whose family has not made contact and collate and log any supporting evidence. Registers are checked monthly by the Education Welfare Officer.
Thank you for your support.

Staff appointment

09 Jan 2026

After Mrs Roe taking on her new role as school secretary, we are pleased to announce that we have appointed Mrs Kelly Lawrence for 15 hours a week to support Key stage 2 pupils.

Potential snow day

08 Jan 2026

Dear Parents & Carers,
In the light of the amber weather warning for snow tomorrow morning and the potential of travel disruption or school closure, please be aware that children will be access their learning remotely if needed.
The learning menus from Tuesday are still available and for pupils in Years 3 - 6 can also access j2Blast on Hwb, along with Times Tables Rockstars and Mathletics.
Weather reports can change and alter, so it is currently difficult to know whether we will receive a significant amount of snow. For this reason, we are monitoring the situation closely.
I will provide an update regarding school opening by 7.30 am tomorrow morning.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Kind regards
Mrs North

Back to school

05 Jan 2026

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the children back to school tomorrow; however, as is always the case during periods of snow and freezing conditions, this does present us with a number of challenges.

My primary concern is the health and safety of our school community. This includes the safety of pupils and families on site, particularly in relation to the school car park, as well as the safety of staff who may be travelling in from areas out of town where conditions may be more severe. As you can see from the photographs below, the school park is currently covered with frozen snow and ice, which presents a significant risk.

As Headteacher, in the morning I will coordinate as many staff as possible to grit and clear the pavement to the left as you approach the school from Beilihelig Road, along with the car park and the main school entrance. However, we are forecast further freezing temperatures overnight, which may affect conditions further.

I will provide a further update as early as possible tomorrow morning regarding the opening of the school
Thank you for your patience and understanding. The safety of our pupils, families, and staff remains our highest priority, and all decisions will be made with this firmly in mind.

The Tommy Trevor Davies Case - Brecon

23 Oct 2025

We had a great day yesterday learning all about the history of Brecon Canal. We investigated what materials make a canal bed waterproof. We then followed a script to role play the inquest of the drowning of a 4 year old boy named Tommy Trevor Davies (a true case that happened in Brecon in 1910) in Brecon Canal. The jury unanimously concluded a verdict of accidental drowning.
We saw where Tommy and his brother Teddy and sister Bessie were playing (Theatre Park Grounds) before the accident took place, we went for a walk down Gas Work Lane to see the house where Tommy lived (A few doors down from the Rugby Club) and saw Gas Work House (The old Gasworks) where Mr Robison lived. ( The man who found Tommy in the canal).
We researched census information, looked at maps and read the original newspaper report from when the accident was reported.
We are now really excited to be involved in creating a podcast with the Canal and River Trust on this case.

Year 2 performed their Alphabet of memories of Mrs Lawrence, Year 4 recited a poem called "A few of your headteacher things" - based on "My favourite things" from the Sound of Music and Year 5 performed a sketch highlighting the decades that Mrs Lawrence has dedicated to our children and education.

Our Thankful Tuesday assembly started with one of Mrs Lawrence's favourite songs

We all came dressed in some of the things that Mrs Lawrence doesn't like in school - denim jeans, crocs and jumpers around our waists.

Mrs Lawrence was presented with a signed leavers t-shirt, a beautiful rose bush and her very own pair of crocs, complete with the customary high heels - we didn't want her to feel left out.

We also sand and danced to another of Mrs Lawrence's favourite disco tunes.

We are looking forward to more celebrations later in the week.

Tuesday Leavers!

14 Jul 2025

Changes to tomorrow!
Unfortunately the weather looks very wet tomorrow. Instead of going to the river Year 6 will take part in a "Race Across Llanfaes" challenge!
Please wear a coat and bring a change of clothes in case you get caught in a shower!
You will still have fish and chip shop lunch and visit Llanfaes Dairy, so please send in £5 for an ice-cream/milkshake or smoothie.
Please send plenty to drink tomorrow!
We look forward to seeing you at 5pm for our Leavers Concert.

Year 6 had a great time river dipping today and they caught lots of creatures, a good sign that our river is a healthy one. Have a look at the pictures below!

Oliver!

27 Jun 2025

We were kindly invited to watch a performance of the musical Oliver, performed by the pupils of Alway House at Christ College. The performance was fantastic and it was great to see past pupils of our school performing. Our pupils behaved impeccably and really enjoyed the experience - excellent ambassadors for Llanfaes School!

Estyn Inspection Report

29 May 2025

Estyn Inspection Report
We are very pleased to finally be able to share with you the Estyn Inspection report, following our recent inspection.
The report is based on extensive, thorough interrogation of all aspects of the school. This included lesson observations by all inspectors on every day they were present, book scrutiny, talking with children intensely, analysis of data, questionnaire responses, analysis of feedback from staff, parents, governors and outside agencies eg local authority. Every area of school life and operation was scrutinised in detail.
As a result, the report provides a holistic view of our school and, most importantly, our children.
The full report is included here for you to read, as well as the summary document.
inspection-report-llanfaes-c-p--school-2025.pdf
parents-and-carers---inspection-report---llanfaes-c-p--school-2025.pdf
The report is available on the Estyn website - www.estyn.gov.wales
Key phrases in the report are:-

'Llanfaes School has a caring ethos that permeates all aspects of it's work.'

' ... the school promotes positive well-being amongst staff and pupils.'

'... pupils are happy to attend school, feel safe, respected and thrive.'

'The positive working relationships ... between staff and pupils are a notable feature of the school.'

'... exemplary behaviour of pupils who are polite, respectful and kind towards their peers, staff and other adults.'

'... vibrant learning experiences ...'

'Staff have high expectations and are ambitious for their pupils to progress well.'

'... foster a curiosity for life long learning.'

'The headteacher has high expectations for all and shares these, leading by example.'

'Leaders know their school very well.'

'There is a strong focus on understanding values and leading fulfilling lives.'
Furthermore, we are delighted that the inspection team noted a Spotlight for Early Years provision. Spotlights are a new feature of Estyn inspections. Spotlights -

  • serve as a way to acknowledge and share best practices or successful initiatives that are worth replicating or learning from in other educational settings
  • identify particularly strong aspects or innovative practices during their visit
  • focus on specific areas
  • are showcased on the Estyn website making them accessible to a wider audience of educators and other interested parties.

Please take time to read the full report, rather than only the parent summary as the summary is very brief and does not capture the holistic nature of the findings.
Attaining such a positive report reflects the sustained high expectations of the whole school community. We genuinely thank you as parents and carers for your continued support. Our staff and governors work tirelessly for the school also, and I would like to recognise this and thank them whole heartedly for it.
The recommendations will form part of the School Development Plan for 2025/2026. As you know, the school received the Siarter Iaith Silver Award the week after inspection, so actions will be very specific regarding the recommendations.
We are extremely proud of the Estyn Report and hope you are too! It clearly demonstrates that our children are at the heart of all we do, always have been and always will be.
Llanfaes School is very well placed to build on its many successes as we move forward.  Ardderchog pawb!!!
