VE Day Celebrations

08 May 2025

We Will Remember Them
Across our school community today we remembered and celebrated VE Day's 80th Anniversary. We were thrilled that the events, planned by Year 5 and 6 pupils were such a success. A huge thank you to everyone who was able to join us or participate in the cake competition.
Children across the school were either in red, white or blue or in costumes from the era.

Our day began with the coffee morning. The hall was so full!!! Family and friends joined together to enjoy delicious cakes and cuppas. Those there included a resident from Trenewydd who recalled his VE Day party when he was 15 years old vividly.

Year 5 and 6 led the morning with singing. A huge raffle was also held - many thanks to the many businesses in town who responded to the requests from the children. Morrisons donated the tea, coffee and sugar also.

A fantastic total of £568.90 was raised. This will be used to provide new DCF equipment across the school.
In the afternoon more VE celebrations were held when the classes came together to hear VE Day speeches by Year 5 and 6 pupils and to share WWII songs and dances they have been learning. The whole school joined in with the Lambeth Walk and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy! We were also joined by two different residents from Trenewydd, one of whom was 100 years old and the other 99! As you can imagine, they sang and even danced along remembering all of the words. They were also able to recall their memories of this day 80 years ago - living history.

We are hopeful that this VE Day celebration will be a lovely memory for the children.

Hedteacher Appointment

09 Apr 2025

Dear Parents,
I'm sure your children have told you that there have been a number of different faces around school over the last two days. This was due to Governors holding interviews to find the next headteacher for Llanfaes School.
Our children conducted themselves impeccably and candidates commented on how well behaved and respectful they were towards them.
The successful candidate was our very own Mrs Cath North and I know you will join with me and congratulate her on her appointment.
I know as parents you will support her in her new role as she continues to take our school forward.
Diolch yn fawr.
Mrs Jackie Williams
Chair.

Curriculum

24 Mar 2025

Curriculum for Wales remains our key driver. We are working towards the Four Purposes for all children. The Areas of Learning and Experience (AOLEs) are part of this.
Each of the six AOLEs (Literacy, Language and Communication, Maths and Numeracy, Expressive Arts, Science and Technology, Health and Well Being and Humanites) help us to develop learning for the children. As part of this, and to help the children better understand the 'why' for each, last year some children worked together to think about words which explained it. These then became the visions which we use for each area in school.

Fund raising for school

24 Mar 2025

A  wonderful hamper was raffled outside Morrisons on Saturday by Mrs Goode, Eifion and Bella to raise funds for maths resources in school. Over the 2 hours they raised a brilliant £167.98!!! Eifion and Bella were extremely polite and real ambassadors for our school. The prize was won by Vicci, who will collect from school later in the week.
We really appreciate the fantastic support of Mrs Goode and children and the generosity of the community in donating via the raffle.

Talent show
Yesterday morning was the culmination of the talent show organised by our Year 6 pupils. After auditioning many acts, we were treated to the final eleven on stage. There were of course the four judges too!! The acts were varied and very entertaining. Everyone who audtioned and took part should feel very proud of themselves.

After much debate, the judges finally agreed on the winners
1st - Eva
2nd - Boaz
3rd - Hendrix

Christmas Lunch followed - the only time in the year when children are allowed to sing at the table!! Huge thank you to our canteen staff for cooking a lovely meal as they do all year round! And a special mention to Mrs O'Connor for being on duty in all weathers as dinner lady.

Saying 'goodbye'!
Today is the last day in Camau Bach for Miss Hellard! She is leaving her role to take up a new job working in the NHS. Miss Hellard has given much to not only Camau Bach but Llanfaes School. We will miss her but wish her the very best luck in the future.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DROPPING OFF CHILDREN
At the last parent forum meeting arrangements for dropping children off were discussed. Suggestions were made which we have taken on board. Therefore, as of Jan 7th 2025, in the morning the gates will be opened at the normal time (8.50 am) and children can either walk in alone as they do now or can be accompanied to the class outside door by parents. This will allow parents/carers to speak to staff more easily should they need to do so. The wooden gates will be closed at 9 am so parents will need to leave the school yard by then please.
Pupils return to school on Jan 7th 2025.
All of the staff would like to thank you for your support during what has been an extremely busy term - as always!

Parent and Carer Forum
These meetings are held once every half term. The agenda is co-constructed between school and the parents/carers on the group. Friends also feed into the agenda at times. The group itself has no responsibility for fundraising though.
The forum has looked at a variety of issues and is solution focussed. Each meeting is no longer than an hour.
If you feel you would like to participate please email office@llanfaes.powys.sch.uk .

Lockdown Policy

18 Nov 2024

Lockdown Policy and Drill
In assembly this morning, I explained to the whole school the need for a Lockdown drill, using the scenario of a fire in the locality with toxic fumes or an unknown drone above the school.  The children were led through what would happen for partial and full lockdown. During the assembly it was also pointed out that such a procedure has never been required in the whole of my headship here! The children asked many, sensible questions which were all answered.
They were also informed that there will be a lockdown drill on Wednesday morning, as it is a requirement to practice it once a year now.
Attached is the Lockdown Policy for you all to see. Please note, especially, the aspects regarding how the school will communicate should a lockdown ever be necessary. The role of parents is critical regarding not ringing school during the lockdown as lines will be needed in order that I can communicate with emergency services as required. Schoop and Friend's Facebook will be used for information.

CYCLING PROFICIENCY

15 Nov 2024

Important information
There are still a few children who have not returned their permission slip. Your child does not have to do Cycling Proficiency, but they will not be able to take part without permission from a parent/guardian.
The Cycling will take place on the 18th, 19th and 22nd. If you wish your child can leave their bike in school for the duration of the week and it will be kept overnight in the Year 6 classroom.
The children normally go out in maximum groups of 12 on the road if they pass level 1, that can sometimes be less depending on the numbers, however the instructors will divide them up.
Remember your child's bike needs to be roadworthy i.e brakes working, tyres inflated and cycle helmets fitting in good condition
Due to the time of year and the weather forecast for next week coats/ gloves may be of benefit as they will be outside for most of the day.
If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to email me.
Many thanks,
Mrs North

Children in Need

15 Nov 2024

Pudsey would be so proud of how our school has, as always, supported this very important charity. Thank you all! As well as spots today we had a range of outfits which together looked spectacular!! In assembly we thought about why we support the charity, and again discussed the 'backpack' everyone carries which can, at different times, be heavier for some than others. Raising money for Children in Need is meant to be fun though so we finished assembly with all pupils and staff doing the Cha Cha slide!

Ethical citizenship in action!!
Enjoy your weekend and again, thank you all.

What is being taught this half term?

14 Nov 2024

Our Parent & Carer Forum group at the last meeting suggested that a very brief, overview document about what was being taught in each class for each Area of Learning Experience (AOLE) would be useful.
As a result we would like to share with you the document for this half term. If parents find it useful this can be sent out each half term for information.
This is another example of the input the forum can have on school. The next meeting is on Wednesday, 20th November @ 4 pm. Everyone is welcome to come along.

A Great First Visit!
Despite a few, understandable, nerves the first group attending Trenewydd yesterday were fantastic! They embraced the opportunity and chatted and laughed with the residents. They learned a little about the rich lives the residents have had and some of their occupations. It is always a privilege to see the intergenerational relationship evolving. The children will be attending on a rota basis every fortnight. We know there will be more special times ahead during the visits.

After School Club

03 Sep 2024

After School Club is a valued resource at the school. Requests for places, on some days, are out weighing the availability. Due to the space available there is a cap on the number of children we can have per session.
Historically, we have usually been able to accommodate demand and we want to do all we can to support our families. If you have a place booked for your child this week or next but know already that you no longer need it, please contact the office asap as we have families waiting for places.
There will also be further changes to operations which we are bringing in.
  • All requests from now on for places MUST be made via the office - either e mail office@llanfaes.powys.sch.uk or telephone 01874623326
  • The cost per session will be £7.50 per session as of September 9th 2024. This is the first increase for several years and is due to the need for extra staff to accommodate numbers and the rise in resource and food costs.
  • The booking system is being revised in order that there is a fairer system now that the demand is so high. We are considering different options for this and will let you know as soon as we have clarified it. Until then, as stated above, please book via the office.
  • Please inform school asap of any occasions when you do NOT need a place which has been booked in order that it can be offered to someone else.

By working together we are sure that we can continue to provide a service to you all.
Mrs Lawrence

End of Year

19 Jul 2024

Yesterday we said an official goodbye to our fabulous Year 6. They have really stepped up to the mark this year giving back to the school in so many ways. The Leaver's Assembly was a celebration of their time with us although, no denying it was emotional! During it we awarded the annual cups.
The first one, the Wigmore- Wood Cup for Sporting Achievement was given jointly to Hannah and Ellis. They both are superb sports people and demonstrate the highest levels of sporting behaviours in all situations.

Our other annually awarded cup, the Marilyn Roberts Citizenship Cup was awarded to Brooke. She consistently thinks of others showing empathy and care. Everyone needs to be a bit more Brooke!! We were delighted to welcome back Scarlett, last years recipient, to award the cup.

Today has been a splendid day to end the year!
We were thrilled that not only Princess Zama joined us, but Queen Npumi, who visited 2 years ago also came. They joined us for our Achievement Award Assembly. Princess Zama spoke to the children about her life, leaving South Africa during apartheid as her family were threatened with death and settling in Denmark. The Queen thanked everyone for the generous gifts sent last year which her children in school are using daily.
Our visitors loved the singing performed by the whole school and the choir. The Queen led an impromptu sing a long too!

Then it was Achievement Award time - given by a Queen and a Princess!

Camau Bach - Austin
Reception - Ruby
Year 1 - Kian
Year 2 - Evan
Year 3 - Maddie
Year 4 - Boaz
Year 5 - Nicole
Year 6 - Thomas
Our royal visitors also walked around the school and chatted and talked to children, staff and governors.

Our links with the Queen's school are very important to us and we hope to further this next year.
The overall winning house this term were CRADOC - their reward was to be first at the ice cream van.
The afternoon was perfect for ice creams, playing and music on the field.
It has been a very full year looking back.
On behalf of all of the staff can I say DIOLCH YN FAWR IAWN IAWN!!
We wish all those leaving us, staff and pupils, the very best for the future whatever it may bring.
Have a lovely summer holiday and we will see you back in school on September 3rd!!

Competition Winners

16 Jul 2024

Brecon Rotary School Planter Competition Winners!!!!
The children in Year 3 have worked all term on their entry for this competition and today was judging day.
Members of the Rotary Club visited school and asked the children about their Busy Bees planter. The children were able to speak confidently about the project. They grew all of the plants from seeds and have all been involved in nurturing them into the fantastic display you can see. This project was cross curricular involving many skills and provided a truly authentic learning experience. All of the children and staff are very proud!! They received two certificates and a trophy. Look out for them in the Brecon and Radnor too hopefully.

Year 6 Leavers Day Out

15 Jul 2024

Dear Parents,
Tomorrow we will visiting Glangwdi Glamping Site. The children have ordered pizzas, waffles and milkshakes with their lollipop money. We also hope to have a fire pit, play some games and get a little bit wet!
We will walk up to the venue at break time and return by 3:15pm.
Please could your child wear old clothes and bring an old towel. The weather looks like it will be dry for us but I would suggest a waterproof coat in case of showers!
I am still missing 3 baby photos. If you have not already emailed or sent in a picture please could you do so by Wednesday.
Many thanks,
Mrs North

Trenewydd

04 Jul 2024

Yesterday the whole class visited Trenewydd together to say their farewells to the residents. These visits are enjoyed by the pupils and residents alike, and we are very grateful to the staff at Trenewydd, especially Becky, for making us so welcome. The children have grown in confidence over the year and developed good relationships with the residents. They always teach the children so much, not least that their lives have been rich in experiences!
Yesterday the children sang and danced with the residents and then simply chatted. There were so many heartwarming moments, difficult to capture in photographs. However, here are a few anyway.

If you would like to see some video content please check on our 'X' - @LlanfaesSchool

It has been a pleasure to take the children across to Trenewydd this year!

Regimental Museum Trip

14 Jun 2024

What a pleasure it was to take the class to the Regimental Museum today. The children engaged fully and learned so much about our link with the Zulu nation. They dressed up as Victorian soldiers and Zulus as well as handling Victorian artefacts. The listened carefully to what they were told and asked lots of questions.
Here is a taste of the day - I will upload more photographs to Google Classroom later.

We are so proud of the way they behaved and engaged in the whole experience!

Unfortunately, due to School Grounds Day, the proof of the class photograph did not get sent home.
However, here are photographs of the photograph and the proof card. On it is the detail you need if you want to order one.
Apologies again - but I would like to say a personal thank you and huge well done to the whole class who really rose to the challenges of organising the day and did an outstanding job! They showed skills any employer would welcome. Have a good half term all.

School Grounds Day

24 May 2024

School Grounds Day
Today has been outstanding!! Organised and led by our amazing Year 6 pupils, the children have been active outside all day! Thank you Year 6 for a memorable, whole school day!
The children were divided into cross class groups and then rotated around the various activities planned by Year 6. These were spring A-Z walk, minibeast treasure hunt, minibeast hotel, colour bingo, fire pit, shelter building and playground games. Additionally, there were opportunities for some painting and planting! The skills and learning taking place was remarkable as was the teamwork. Luckily the rain held off so everyone was able to enjoy the picnic lunch too.
We are so proud of all the children achieved today in so many different ways.
Thank you all for the donations and support, and to Mr Hardacre for helping tame the willow and Mrs Williams, Chair of Governors, for helping with planting. We also used some of the Colour Run money for a few extra things we needed.
Here are a few photographs from the day to give just a flavour!

We hope that the children share with you what they did today - though they may be a little tired as they did not stop all day!!
All staff wish you all a very happy and enjoyable half term.

Sports For Champions

22 May 2024

Sports for Champions
This afternoon, Brad Bates, a powerchair footballer for England, joined us for an assembly and then the sponsored activities. Brad shared with everyone his inspiring story, overcoming his physical disabilities to find a way to participate in the sport he loves - football. Brad shared how much he has to train and the experiences and successes he has had through persevering. This includes being in the team which has won the premier league of powerchair 5 consecutive times. He has also represented England at the Euros and is the highest scorer. The children asked many very sensible questions about his career too.
After this, Brad led the children in their sponsored activities - quite a task master!! All of the children did so well during this. We cannot thank you all enough for your support in raising ...

£890!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This will be shared with Sports for Champions, to support athletes like Brad, and the school. We will use it to add to our school playground facilities - the school council have already made a list!

Again, thank you all for your support as always.

Brad presented certificates to the Bronze, Silver and Gold winners for the amounts they raised.

Then it was time for action!

A message from Mrs Price

20 May 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians, our wonderful friends and community of Llanfaes,

It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to let you know that after nearly 4 years at Llanfaes school I will be leaving at the end of the summer term. This has not been an easy decision, saying goodbye will be immensely difficult so I wanted to write to you ahead of this time to share a few words.

Firstly, our Parents and families - I cannot thank you enough for your unwavering support and encouragement. You welcomed me with open arms and have trusted me endlessly with your wonderful children. I have benefited from and have been shaped by the wonderful relationships we share and will always be grateful for the opportunity to not only work alongside you in supporting the children in their education but send a heartfelt thank you for allowing me to nurture and love your children as I have. The children have given me the best years of my career thus far. Being with them has been the most joyous and wonderful experience.

Back in 2020 with the now Year 5 - what a start to my time at Llanfaes! We did Covid and it’s online learning, there was Buzz Lightyear and the postman, a medieval WOW day…and a trip around the world.

Year 4- Wow! A visit to Space, aliens and a class pet!

Year 3 - My superheroes in training, Eco warriors…ready to take on the world.

And my current Year 2 -  Super stars in their own right, a Christmas performance that was a match for any Westend show.  Memories to last a life time.

I know my heart has tripled in size (at least) from spending my days with and getting to know the children as I have. There is not one day that they haven’t made me smile or laugh, they are the BEST little people and make me immensely proud to say I have been and am their teacher. I have and will shed many a tear on leaving them but that only reflects the sheer joy and wonderment they have brought to my life. Wherever life will take them, I know our children will shine!! And wherever I go, I know I’ll take them with me!

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

I look forward to seeing you all before the end of term and hopefully be able to thank you personally.

I wish the school the very, very best for the future.

Kindest regards,

Mrs Price
