Mount Street Infants awarded their 9th Eco School Platinum Status

14 Jun 2024

Click on the link below to watch our Eco Video
https://www.j2e.com/mount-street-cp-infants/Mrs+Hyde/20240430154608000iOS.mov/
I was so proud of all our wonderful pupils in Mount Street Infants. During this assessment visit they demonstrated they were all confident, ethical informed citizens. They were passionate to showcase their learning and were proud to share all their Eco actions and activities with the assessors.  The assessors looked through our Eco Action plans, spoke to staff and then the pupils welcomed them into our assembly where they watched a video created by pupils to showcase Mount Street Infants Eco school.  Some of our Eco Committee then took them of a tour of each class where pupils chatted to them about their learning before finishing on a tour of the school grounds.
I have included some of the glowing report we received after the visit.
'Achieving a 9th Platinum renewal is a fantastic achievement. The school, staff and pupils should feel proud of their hard work and long standing commitment'  Laura Haig
'Following my visit to Mount Street Infant School and conversing with the Eco-Coordinator and Eco-Committee, I feel very confident in being able to renew Mount Street Infant School’s Platinum Eco-School status for a ninth consecutive year. Congratulations, your hard work really showed during my visit.
I was very impressed with the in-depth knowledge of environmental topics displayed by the learners during conversation as they showed me around their school.  It was very clear that the Eco-Schools ethos has become an embedded part of your school’s belief system, and not only underpins your delivered curriculum, but also influences all walks of life within the Mount Street Infant community, a result of implementing the Eco-Schools programme, effectively and consistently, for a number of years.
There was evidence from the action plan, that an environmental review had been completed and that the results of this influenced the direction of the programme this academic year, with a particular focus on global citizenship which has been effectively delivered as a stand-alone topic. There was a myriad of evidence throughout classwork and in displays around the school, which showed that learning around the goals was comprehensive and age appropriate, allowing the children to understand the basic purpose of the goals, and how to recognise if their own and others’ wants and needs are being met. This was just one example of the eco-schools programme being delivered through your school curriculum.
It was very clear that environmental learning is often driven through discussions with the learners about their environment and focuses on their concerns and interests to drive further learning, for example, after finding lots of ladybirds in the playground, an investigation took place as to why this might be and what impact ladybirds have on our biodiversity and their role within the eco-system of the school’s grounds
I also really liked that you had clearly displayed your targets for all pupils to see, on one of the school walls. This was a really nice way to display the aims you hope to achieve in an appropriate way for the age group. Pupils were able to talk about all of the work you are doing in Ysgol Mount Street using these as a prompt. This is also a great example of sharing the work you are doing with the whole school community.
As well as the evaluated action plan, the collection of evidence that I was presented with showed that the seven steps of the Eco-School process are very much in place, allowing learners across the school to access the programme and share an awareness of environmental actions taking place in the school. The Eco-Committee were confident in their role in the school community and had a good understanding of their responsibilities in the committee. I felt it was clear that the group is pupil-led, appropriately supported by staff where necessary, but without taking accountability of the group from the learners.
It was clear that the children in Mount Street Infants are tuned into the some of the current issues surrounding our changing climate and environment and are empowered learners who feel they can make impactful change. For example, I really loved hearing that the children had noticed the change to the way their yoghurt was being served and they recognised the increase in waste as an avoidable issue. They took the initiative to address this issue, with support, and have implemented a change within their community, great work!
It isn’t often that I leave a school struggling to come up with feedback for improvement in one way or another, but I can honestly say that I was extremely impressed during my visit. This is a huge accolade to Mrs Hyde, the staff and the children of Mount Street Infant’s School. I hugely commend the continued commitment to environmental education.

Dosbarth Fern

29 May 2024

We have enjoyed taking part in a creative project over the last few weeks. We invited a local artist, Laura Dennis, into school to show us how she made her ‘tiny houses’. It was very inspiring!
Over the next few weeks we worked hard to use the new techniques we had learned to create our very own ‘tiny houses’ too.

We then worked in groups to display our houses outdoors in order that we could use our photography skills to take pictures of our models.

We had great fun creating homes in the woods too.

We also learned the names of the parts of a house in welsh.

Dosbarth Heather

29 May 2024

We have been learning many new skills lately.

We have been developing our creative skills by finding out about ‘Lino printing’. Our designs were inspired by ‘Bannau Brycheiniog’. We had to learn to scale back our designs to ensure that our designs would be simple enough to make a clear print. We then transferred our designs onto polystyrene tiles before using a roller to add acrylic paint. We were very impressed with our printing techniques.

We have also been practicing our welsh skills by reading welsh sentences, and asking and answering questions.

Dosbarth Fern

28 Apr 2024

The children all helped to make some cakes for the 'Little Troopers' Cake sale.

We have carried on looking at dandelions this week. We became creative on the field and made lion faces with a partner.

We then took our shoes and socks off and enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the field.

On Wednesday we took part in 'Beep Beep' day. Thank you to all of the children and adults who walked to school with us (Photos to follow). Back at school we learnt about how tall we need to be to sit in a car seat with a back and then on a booster seat.  Remember children must be in a car seat until they are at least 125cm and then a booster seat until they are 135cm tall or age 12. Here is a link on the law about using car seats.
Child car seats: the law: Using a child car seat or booster seat - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
The children all measured each other and we found out that everyone is our class should be in a car seat with a back. Each child then had a go at sitting in Mrs Holloway's seats in her car- Don't worry we didn't go anywhere.

We also made our own road on the yard. Some children walked and others rode vehicles. We had to stop, look, listen and think before we crossed the road.

Back in class we have been carrying out lots of activities to help us learn our number bonds to 10.

At the end of the week we were very lucky to have one of our Dad's visit us and talk about his job in the military.

PTA Meeting Minutes from the last meeting
Date:  Tuesday 23rd January 2024
Time: 8.00pm
Location: The Clarence Inn, Brecon and via TEAMS
Attendance – Alice James (chair), Liz Bennett (secretary), Amy McMillan (treasurer), Mrs Vicci Holloway, Sara Smith, Hayley Studley
Welcome from Alice. Apologies from Mrs Shan Kenchington (headteacher), Elen Kelly, Kirsten Johns, Kayleigh Gee, Gemma Sandison, Ceri Hughes
No amendments needed from last minutes.
Amy gave the financial update. Present balance of £576.05. Payments for ‘Elfridges’ stock and bags/stickers (£178.17 + £34.95), Christmas books (£98.60), Makaton membership (£130) and a donation to the Cathedral (£100) have been processed. A further deduction for Parentkind membership (£153) has been made. Amy advised that this membership gives PTA insurance and can be used for ideas for fundraising events. The request for a clothes airer (£24.98) has now been deducted also.  The Christmas movie night raised £277.42 and the Christmas raffle a further £272.50.
Alice asked if there were any spending requests. Mrs Holloway advised there were requests for ‘Makedo Discover tool sets’ (~£100 in total) and an educational session from National Parks for Dosbarth Bramble and Dosbarth Fern (~£180).  After discussion, all in agreement to the requests.
Matters arising from previous meetings were discussed – the future of PTA.  Mrs Holloway informed everyone that Mrs Jenkinson attended a meeting with Mrs Sarah Court (headteacher of the new school) and asked how PTA might be set up after September 2024 when the new school is opened and operating across three sites.  Plans had not been made as yet.
Events this term were discussed. It was decided that a ‘Rainbow hampers’ raffle would be organised as this has always been successful as a fundraising event. Mrs Holloway advised that the raffle could be drawn in assembly on Monday 18th March (last week of term).  It was decided that this could be a ‘Rainbow Day’ – a day when children could wear colourful non-uniform to school. It was agreed that it was a good idea for tickets to be sold using ‘squares’ and via ‘ParentPay’.  Alice suggested sending ‘Schoop’ out to parents/carers to ask for raffle prizes during the week 11th-15th March. Each class (including Smarties) would be allocated a colour and each child could donate an item (non-perishable) of that colour to their class hamper. Sarah to make a poster with all the information to be sent out via ‘Schoop’ to parents/carers.
A coffee morning (as discussed in previous meeting) would be arranged to take place after half-term, inviting parents into school and raising money for PTA (date to be confirmed). PTA members to support by baking cakes and setting up and organising on day.
Mrs Holloway advised that the school would be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day (Thursday 21st March) by inviting everyone to wear mismatched/colourful socks. There would be a recommended donation of £1 to fundraise for ’21 Plus’ (local DS charity). It was suggested that children could also plant a sunflower each on the day, as this is the logo of the charity. Liz to provide Sarah with information in order to make a poster to ‘Schoop’ out to parents/carers.
The ‘Uniform Co-operative’ was discussed.  Mrs Holloway informed everyone that there are no longer many items available.  All agreed that a ‘Schoop’ should be sent out to ask parents/carers to make donations. All items needed including wellies, black leggings and summer dresses ready for next term. When more items are available and the weather improves the ‘Uniform Co-operative’ can be set up in the outdoor area again.
AOB – Alice raised the issue of parking at the school. All agreed the need for continued patrolling.
Date of next meeting to be confirmed.
Close and thanks by Alice.
Meeting ended by chair at 9.18pm.

15th- 19th April

21 Apr 2024

What another busy week in Dosbarth Fern. We have carried on with the dandelion theme. The children created dandelion pictures using water and paint. They then added salt to see what would happen. Once dry the children added details to create their dandelions in a field.

The children were all able to order the lifecycle of a dandelion.

During amser enfys the challenge was to make dandelions using different resources.

We have also been playing games to learn how to tell the time. The children made a giant clock for class as well as making a clock on the yard. They then practised telling the time in Welsh by playing Faint o'r gloch ydy hi Mr Blaidd? (What's the time Mr Wolf?)

The children have also been carrying out lots of their phonic activities.

Beep Beep Day- April 2024

21 Apr 2024

On Wednesday 24th April we would like to walk as a group from the co-op car park to school. We will be meeting at 8:40am ready to leave at 8:45am. Please meet us by the bottom of the steps by the college building (the old tourist information centre). We will then walk to school together. Please note you must walk with your child.
Remember car park passes are available from the school office. It would be wonderful to see as many people as possible on our road safety walk to school on Wednesday.

With April being the ‘Month of the Military Child’ we have been looking at the flower that represents these amazing children.

We began by drawing a dandelion from memory, then reflected on our drawings by looking at real dandelions close up, and other artist drawings. We then went on to improve our art work using our new knowledge.

As we having been looking closely at ‘dandelion clocks’ we thought is would be a perfect opportunity to look at real clocks. We began by looking at the parts of a clock before making our own clocks.

We have also starting to think about time this week. How long is a second? How long is a minute?

What can you actually do in one minute?

Maybe you can try this challenge at home too!

We have also been finding out about ‘Eid’ this week.

There’s always time for a bit of musical fun too!

We had lots of fun on our last week before the Easter break.

We listened to Easter stories in the woods before going on an egg hunt.

We made yummy  🐣 Easter nests 🐣 too.

We supported a very important charity too this week. In support of ‘World Down Syndrome Day’ we wore odd socks to school and planted our very own sunflower.
‘Just like sunflowers, every child grows and blooms uniquely’

We wish to thank the PTA for supporting this very special day with their donation to enable us to carry out this activity.

This week we began to think about the meaning of Easter and how new life in spring reminds Christians of Jesus. We went on a walk to look for new life around our school grounds and creatively interpreted a spring poem.

We had great fun supporting Comic Relief. We held our very own talent show, made funny faces and even completed some Comic Relief maths challenges.

Thank you for your donations.

Dydd Gwyl Dewi Celebrations 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

07 Mar 2024

We began our day by joining the St. David’s Day parade in town.  The Criw Cymraeg had attended meetings with other Criw Cymraeg members from our cluster schools to decide upon and learn the songs which featured in the parade.  They then helped to teach them to the rest of the school.  We have loved singing them during our weekly ‘Canu Cymraeg’ sessions and we hope you agree that the singing and the atmosphere at the parade was immense!
Da iawn pawb!

We had designed and made our own banner to take to the parade…

In the afternoon we performed at our Eisteddfod.  We hope you enjoyed our retell of ‘The Door in the Mountain’ and a little snippet of the Welsh songs we have been learning?

World Book Day

07 Mar 2024

We will be celebrating world book day tomorrow. Children can dress in comfy clothes or as their favourite character. We have plenty of costumes here if you do not have.
Next week will continue to celebrate world book day, by doing lots of fun activities around a book they have loved us reading, 'Aliens Love Underpants'. We will be making a rocket, so if you have any large boxes that the children could sit in to make it into a rocket, we would really appreciate you bringing them in.
Thank you

We began our week by finding out why and how people in Wales celebrate St. David’s Day.

We made a delicious leek soup.

We listened to the story of Dewi Sant before completing a 16 piece puzzle.

We were very excited to perform for our families during our St. David’s Day celebration.
We hope you enjoyed it!

We began our week by finding out how and why people in Wales celebrate St. David’s day.

We used this opportunity to look at symmetry. We looked at range of symmetrical items and explored symmetry through a range of activities.

We were fortunate to have a visit from ‘Bannau Brycheiniog’ National Parks Officers this week too. We learned all about the wildlife that lives in and around the River Usk and how plastic pollution affects their habitats. We played a fun game to gain an understanding of how important trees are to the wildlife, made bird feeders and used our ‘beaks’ to create nests and find food.

We had a great day on St. David’s day. We were so excited to perform for our families. We hope you all enjoyed our celebration. We even had time to prepare a delicious leek soup too as we waited for you to come.

What a busy week

25 Feb 2024

As Saint David’s day is approaching we have started to think about aspects of Wales and it's traditions. We went on a lovely walk around our school grounds to look for daffodils before finding out a little more about the parts of this lovely plant.

We have been busy learning lots of welsh songs and even created our very own ‘welsh dance’ too.

During maths this week we have been carrying out repeated patterns.

We have been finding out a little more about our local environment. We began by thinking about the River Usk, which led us on to finding out about ‘the water cycle’.

All the children made the staff very proud this week during their swimming lesson. An extra huge well done to the Reception children who went with school for the first time.

Last week we focused on recycling. After a windy night, we were shocked to find so much litter in our school grounds. We worked as a team to collect all the litter, and sort it for recycling. We made a tally chart to show how many of each material we collected and then used the data to create a graph.

We had fun in Forest School helping the birds find wiggly worms to eat.

We were very grateful to the PTA. They bought a special tool kit for the school in order that we could recycle old cardboard. This week we practiced using the tools to create our own birds before having a go all by ourselves.

We even had time for a few visitors.
Mrs Cornelius came to help us learn some new Welsh playground games.

Help the Homeless Wales also popped in to collect the lovely hamper that we created to help others in need.  They were very grateful.

Da iawn Dosbarth Fern!

Do you know the difference between and E-bike and an Electric Motorcycle?

30 Jan 2024

Bore Da, Good Morning Ysgol / School,

Attached is a Road Safety Wales Poster which explains the difference between what a legal E-bike is and what is classed as an Electric Motorbike.
 https://schoop.co.uk/UploadFiles/5721/road-safety-wales-e-bikes-and-electric-motorcycles--social-media-resources--june-2023.pdf
Many parents genuinely do not know, what is legal and safe and what is not.  This can lead to Parents, Grand Parents, and the Responsible Person sometimes purchasing something which is illegal or not suitable for their child, because of their age and the restriction which go with some of these items.

Please can I ask that you display this poster on your Parent Information notice boards, on your Facebook , X (Formally Twitter), or any other media facilities you use to share information with your school. The more people who see this message and maybe think before purchasing these items, either new or second-hand.  The safer the environment for the children we can provide.

When is an E-bike not an E-bike, when it has No Peddles !!

Many Thanks

Regards

Yr Hen Galan

28 Jan 2024

We discussed how we celebrate the new year currently and how Yr Hen Galan was celebrated in the past.  We worked together to create lists and discovered that some traditions overlap.
We were so lucky to be visited by Y Fari Lwyd, a special tradition from the past which is believed to bring good luck.

We used our bilingual skills to follow instructions to make a ‘Perllan’, another tradition from Yr Hen Galan.  We searched the woodlands for the resources we needed.

Bluebell’s Learning

We took part in an online ‘Drawalong’ with the author and illustrator Nick Sharrat.  I think we have some budding illustrators amongst our pupils!

We have been learning how to measure accurately to the nearest centimetre through a variety of activities.

As part of our learning about our locality we learnt about local rivers and streams.  We used the book ‘The Journey’ to help us understand how streams become oceans.  We designed and made our own boats and rafts to demonstrate this journey on a story mat.

Our topic for this term is

‘You are never to small to make a difference’

Throughout the term we will be focusing on the different ways that we can help to look after our town and our countryside, which will help us to look after our world.

After finding out about the different ways that we could help, we worked together to create a list of things that we and others could do.

To help look after our local wildlife, we will be making bird feeders to ensure that the birds have plenty of energy in the cold winter months. In order to take part in the Big School’s Birdwatch we also took part in a virtual event to find out what we needed to do.

After finding out about the different ways that we could help, we worked together to create a list of things that we and others could do.

We went for a lovely winter walk around the school grounds. It was a beautiful frosty day!
We talked about all the wonderful things that we could see along the way.

We joined a virtual event as part of the RSBP Big School’s Birdwatch to find out we could join in with the big Birdwatch.

Then went for another walk to find out where the best place would be to do our Birdwatch. We wondered why there were not many birds…then we found out why! We realised that we needed to take better care of the birds this winter (a job for next week).

In maths we have been practicing ordering, counting and forming our numbers correctly.

In Welsh, we have been learning about the weather. We made our own audio books so that we could practice at home too. Click on the links to hear.

Brecon Nativity Trail

12 Dec 2023

I'm writing on behalf of the Churches in Brecon. You may already have heard but this year the churches in Brecon have set up a Nativity Trail around the town. Hidden in shop and business window displays are 19 characters associated with the Nativity Story. The idea is that children (with their parents) can wander around Brecon and when they spot a character they can scan the QR code which will take them to a page on the Kensington Baptist Church website. There they will find out a bit more about each character and the role they play in the Christmas narrative. They will also be able to access a Christmas craft to do at home which relates to each character!

Characters are going to be in the windows until Christmas Day but the closing date to win a prize for finding all 19 characters remains open until 1st January 2024.

I attach a poster, should you wish to pop one up in school or maybe send out to parents and a participation form that children can fill in should they decide to take on the challenge.

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy and blessed Christmas. Anna Bessant and I will be in touch again very soon to share with you exciting news about the Live Nativity taking place on Christmas Eve, with real camels!

Thank you again and God bless

Christmas concert

06 Dec 2023

FERNS For our Christmas Concert this year, we are 'townsfolk/innkeepers'. Could you please provide a long sleeved black/navy/dark top and bottoms (eg. leggings or trousers or joggers) for your child to wear under their tabard.
Children can wear these to school on Friday as we will be making sure all costumes are complete. These dark clothes will be needed on Tuesday for the afternoon performance and again for the evening.
If you would prefer to send them in a named carry bag to keep in school you are more than welcome.
Thank you for your support.

We are collecting batteries!

05 Dec 2023

Primary school pupils in Powys could win a share of £500 worth of vouchers for their school if they recycle as many batteries as they can.

Powys County Council is running a free battery recycling competition and is urging primary schools to sign up to be in with a chance of winning a share of £500 worth of Amazon vouchers. The first placed school collecting the most batteries will win a £300 voucher, with the schools in second and third place claiming a £150 and a £50 voucher respectively.

The competition is being sponsored by the European Recycling Platform, the council’s compliance scheme for waste electrical and electronic equipment and batteries. Primary schools who sign up will be provided with a free battery box and will compete from the beginning of December until the end of the school year (19 July 2024) to collect as many domestic batteries as possible.

This includes the standard AA and AAA nickel cadmium batteries, button cell batteries, power packs from tools and mobile phone and laptop batteries.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “This competition not only gives schools the chance to win some vouchers, but it also encourages their pupils and their families to recycle their batteries. I would urge every school in the county to sign up and take part. “Batteries are made from recyclable metals including lead, cadmium, zinc, lithium and mercury. Each battery collected by a school will be taken apart and the recovered materials used to make new batteries and other items, rather than being lost forever. “Teaching our future generations about the importance of recycling is a really important job. Participating schools will be instilling good recycling behaviours messages to the pupils and helping their communities cut carbon emissions, boost recycling rates, and inspiring everyone to recycle more.”

The Three little pigs

26 Nov 2023

We started the week off by visiting Forest School. A lot of team work was carried out to make a stick house for a pig to live in. Some houses also fitted the children in.

Since the start of term Dosbarth Fern  have been observing the changes with the trees. Last week we noticed that so many leaves have now fallen to the ground.

We played 'What's the time Mr Wolf?' We used lots of Welsh vocabulary.

Carol from Designed to smile came to show us how to brush our teeth.

We really enjoyed the visit from a real author, Tessa Gearing. This inspired us to write our own stories about the three little pigs. We have worked so hard writing our stories but they are not finished yet as the children did not want to stop until they reached the end. We will be finishing them off this week and look forward to sharing the amazing writing with you.

During PE we went to a building site. We worked with a partner to make a dance based on building houses.

Last week we explored the materials that the little pigs used to build their houses, before taking part in our own investigation where we have to create our own house. We thought carefully about the materials that we would use, built and tested them to see if the wolf could ‘huff and puff’ and blow our houses down.

Dosbarth Brambles

26 Nov 2023

We have been continuing our learning around the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’.

After exploring colour and colour mixing we followed instructions to draw a pig and practiced painting inside the lines.

We created our own puppet show using welsh sentence patterns that we had been practicing.

We explored the materials that the little pigs used to build their houses before taking part in our own investigation where we have to create our own house. We thought carefully about the materials that we would use, built and tested them to see if the wolf could ‘huff and puff’ and blow our houses down.

We have also been taking part in a few important events recently. We gained an understanding of ‘Remebrance Day’ and had fun raising money for ‘Children in Need’.

Class photos

25 Nov 2023

We have been designing bug hotels.  First we wrote lists of what we would need, then we collected what we needed from the grounds.  Finally we created a little room each in the bug hotel that Mrs Thomas’ dad kindly made for us.

We learnt about the festival of Diwali from our friends and from our own research.  Here are some pictures of our creative work.

There's an Alien in my lunchbox!

23 Nov 2023

We were very fortunate to have the author ‘Tessa Gearing’ visit Mount Street Infants. She has written the book ‘There’s an Alien in my lunchbox!’ This visit was organised by Book-ish in Crickhowell. The children enjoyed singing songs, listening to Tessa read the book and carrying out a quiz.

As part of the visit, the hardback book can be purchased for £12. If you wish to buy a book, please fill in the order form and send cash or a cheque (made payable to Book-ish) into school in an envelope by Monday 4th December. Tessa Gearing will come back and sign any books bought from Book-ish.

Order forms will be sent home with your child tomorrow.
