PTA Meeting Minutes from the last meeting
Date:  Tuesday 23rd January 2024
Time: 8.00pm
Location: The Clarence Inn, Brecon and via TEAMS
Attendance – Alice James (chair), Liz Bennett (secretary), Amy McMillan (treasurer), Mrs Vicci Holloway, Sara Smith, Hayley Studley
Welcome from Alice. Apologies from Mrs Shan Kenchington (headteacher), Elen Kelly, Kirsten Johns, Kayleigh Gee, Gemma Sandison, Ceri Hughes
No amendments needed from last minutes.
Amy gave the financial update. Present balance of £576.05. Payments for ‘Elfridges’ stock and bags/stickers (£178.17 + £34.95), Christmas books (£98.60), Makaton membership (£130) and a donation to the Cathedral (£100) have been processed. A further deduction for Parentkind membership (£153) has been made. Amy advised that this membership gives PTA insurance and can be used for ideas for fundraising events. The request for a clothes airer (£24.98) has now been deducted also.  The Christmas movie night raised £277.42 and the Christmas raffle a further £272.50.
Alice asked if there were any spending requests. Mrs Holloway advised there were requests for ‘Makedo Discover tool sets’ (~£100 in total) and an educational session from National Parks for Dosbarth Bramble and Dosbarth Fern (~£180).  After discussion, all in agreement to the requests.
Matters arising from previous meetings were discussed – the future of PTA.  Mrs Holloway informed everyone that Mrs Jenkinson attended a meeting with Mrs Sarah Court (headteacher of the new school) and asked how PTA might be set up after September 2024 when the new school is opened and operating across three sites.  Plans had not been made as yet.
Events this term were discussed. It was decided that a ‘Rainbow hampers’ raffle would be organised as this has always been successful as a fundraising event. Mrs Holloway advised that the raffle could be drawn in assembly on Monday 18th March (last week of term).  It was decided that this could be a ‘Rainbow Day’ – a day when children could wear colourful non-uniform to school. It was agreed that it was a good idea for tickets to be sold using ‘squares’ and via ‘ParentPay’.  Alice suggested sending ‘Schoop’ out to parents/carers to ask for raffle prizes during the week 11th-15th March. Each class (including Smarties) would be allocated a colour and each child could donate an item (non-perishable) of that colour to their class hamper. Sarah to make a poster with all the information to be sent out via ‘Schoop’ to parents/carers.
A coffee morning (as discussed in previous meeting) would be arranged to take place after half-term, inviting parents into school and raising money for PTA (date to be confirmed). PTA members to support by baking cakes and setting up and organising on day.
Mrs Holloway advised that the school would be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day (Thursday 21st March) by inviting everyone to wear mismatched/colourful socks. There would be a recommended donation of £1 to fundraise for ’21 Plus’ (local DS charity). It was suggested that children could also plant a sunflower each on the day, as this is the logo of the charity. Liz to provide Sarah with information in order to make a poster to ‘Schoop’ out to parents/carers.
The ‘Uniform Co-operative’ was discussed.  Mrs Holloway informed everyone that there are no longer many items available.  All agreed that a ‘Schoop’ should be sent out to ask parents/carers to make donations. All items needed including wellies, black leggings and summer dresses ready for next term. When more items are available and the weather improves the ‘Uniform Co-operative’ can be set up in the outdoor area again.
AOB – Alice raised the issue of parking at the school. All agreed the need for continued patrolling.
Date of next meeting to be confirmed.
Close and thanks by Alice.
Meeting ended by chair at 9.18pm.

15th- 19th April

21 Apr 2024

What another busy week in Dosbarth Fern. We have carried on with the dandelion theme. The children created dandelion pictures using water and paint. They then added salt to see what would happen. Once dry the children added details to create their dandelions in a field.

The children were all able to order the lifecycle of a dandelion.

During amser enfys the challenge was to make dandelions using different resources.

We have also been playing games to learn how to tell the time. The children made a giant clock for class as well as making a clock on the yard. They then practised telling the time in Welsh by playing Faint o'r gloch ydy hi Mr Blaidd? (What's the time Mr Wolf?)

The children have also been carrying out lots of their phonic activities.

Beep Beep Day- April 2024

21 Apr 2024

On Wednesday 24th April we would like to walk as a group from the co-op car park to school. We will be meeting at 8:40am ready to leave at 8:45am. Please meet us by the bottom of the steps by the college building (the old tourist information centre). We will then walk to school together. Please note you must walk with your child.
Remember car park passes are available from the school office. It would be wonderful to see as many people as possible on our road safety walk to school on Wednesday.

Dosbarth Fern

14 Apr 2024

With April being the ‘Month of the Military Child’ we have been looking at the flower that represents these amazing children.

We began by drawing a dandelion from memory, then reflected on our drawings by looking at real dandelions close up, and other artist drawings. We then went on to improve our art work using our new knowledge.

As we having been looking closely at ‘dandelion clocks’ we thought is would be a perfect opportunity to look at real clocks. We began by looking at the parts of a clock before making our own clocks.

We have also starting to think about time this week. How long is a second? How long is a minute?

What can you actually do in one minute?

Maybe you can try this challenge at home too!

We have also been finding out about ‘Eid’ this week.

There’s always time for a bit of musical fun too!

We had lots of fun on our last week before the Easter break.

We listened to Easter stories in the woods before going on an egg hunt.

We made yummy  🐣 Easter nests 🐣 too.

We supported a very important charity too this week. In support of ‘World Down Syndrome Day’ we wore odd socks to school and planted our very own sunflower.
‘Just like sunflowers, every child grows and blooms uniquely’

We wish to thank the PTA for supporting this very special day with their donation to enable us to carry out this activity.

This week we began to think about the meaning of Easter and how new life in spring reminds Christians of Jesus. We went on a walk to look for new life around our school grounds and creatively interpreted a spring poem.

We had great fun supporting Comic Relief. We held our very own talent show, made funny faces and even completed some Comic Relief maths challenges.

Thank you for your donations.

Dydd Gwyl Dewi Celebrations 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

07 Mar 2024

We began our day by joining the St. David’s Day parade in town.  The Criw Cymraeg had attended meetings with other Criw Cymraeg members from our cluster schools to decide upon and learn the songs which featured in the parade.  They then helped to teach them to the rest of the school.  We have loved singing them during our weekly ‘Canu Cymraeg’ sessions and we hope you agree that the singing and the atmosphere at the parade was immense!
Da iawn pawb!

We had designed and made our own banner to take to the parade…

In the afternoon we performed at our Eisteddfod.  We hope you enjoyed our retell of ‘The Door in the Mountain’ and a little snippet of the Welsh songs we have been learning?

World Book Day

07 Mar 2024

We will be celebrating world book day tomorrow. Children can dress in comfy clothes or as their favourite character. We have plenty of costumes here if you do not have.
Next week will continue to celebrate world book day, by doing lots of fun activities around a book they have loved us reading, 'Aliens Love Underpants'. We will be making a rocket, so if you have any large boxes that the children could sit in to make it into a rocket, we would really appreciate you bringing them in.

We began our week by finding out why and how people in Wales celebrate St. David’s Day.

We made a delicious leek soup.

We listened to the story of Dewi Sant before completing a 16 piece puzzle.

We were very excited to perform for our families during our St. David’s Day celebration.
We hope you enjoyed it!

We began our week by finding out how and why people in Wales celebrate St. David’s day.

We used this opportunity to look at symmetry. We looked at range of symmetrical items and explored symmetry through a range of activities.

We were fortunate to have a visit from ‘Bannau Brycheiniog’ National Parks Officers this week too. We learned all about the wildlife that lives in and around the River Usk and how plastic pollution affects their habitats. We played a fun game to gain an understanding of how important trees are to the wildlife, made bird feeders and used our ‘beaks’ to create nests and find food.

We had a great day on St. David’s day. We were so excited to perform for our families. We hope you all enjoyed our celebration. We even had time to prepare a delicious leek soup too as we waited for you to come.

What a busy week

25 Feb 2024

As Saint David’s day is approaching we have started to think about aspects of Wales and it's traditions. We went on a lovely walk around our school grounds to look for daffodils before finding out a little more about the parts of this lovely plant.

We have been busy learning lots of welsh songs and even created our very own ‘welsh dance’ too.

During maths this week we have been carrying out repeated patterns.

We have been finding out a little more about our local environment. We began by thinking about the River Usk, which led us on to finding out about ‘the water cycle’.

All the children made the staff very proud this week during their swimming lesson. An extra huge well done to the Reception children who went with school for the first time.

Last week we focused on recycling. After a windy night, we were shocked to find so much litter in our school grounds. We worked as a team to collect all the litter, and sort it for recycling. We made a tally chart to show how many of each material we collected and then used the data to create a graph.

We had fun in Forest School helping the birds find wiggly worms to eat.

We were very grateful to the PTA. They bought a special tool kit for the school in order that we could recycle old cardboard. This week we practiced using the tools to create our own birds before having a go all by ourselves.

We even had time for a few visitors.
Mrs Cornelius came to help us learn some new Welsh playground games.

Help the Homeless Wales also popped in to collect the lovely hamper that we created to help others in need.  They were very grateful.

Da iawn Dosbarth Fern!

Do you know the difference between and E-bike and an Electric Motorcycle?

30 Jan 2024

Bore Da, Good Morning Ysgol / School,

Attached is a Road Safety Wales Poster which explains the difference between what a legal E-bike is and what is classed as an Electric Motorbike.
 https://schoop.co.uk/UploadFiles/5721/road-safety-wales-e-bikes-and-electric-motorcycles--social-media-resources--june-2023.pdf
Many parents genuinely do not know, what is legal and safe and what is not.  This can lead to Parents, Grand Parents, and the Responsible Person sometimes purchasing something which is illegal or not suitable for their child, because of their age and the restriction which go with some of these items.

Please can I ask that you display this poster on your Parent Information notice boards, on your Facebook , X (Formally Twitter), or any other media facilities you use to share information with your school. The more people who see this message and maybe think before purchasing these items, either new or second-hand.  The safer the environment for the children we can provide.

When is an E-bike not an E-bike, when it has No Peddles !!

Many Thanks

Regards

Yr Hen Galan

28 Jan 2024

We discussed how we celebrate the new year currently and how Yr Hen Galan was celebrated in the past.  We worked together to create lists and discovered that some traditions overlap.
We were so lucky to be visited by Y Fari Lwyd, a special tradition from the past which is believed to bring good luck.

We used our bilingual skills to follow instructions to make a ‘Perllan’, another tradition from Yr Hen Galan.  We searched the woodlands for the resources we needed.

Bluebell’s Learning

28 Jan 2024

We took part in an online ‘Drawalong’ with the author and illustrator Nick Sharrat.  I think we have some budding illustrators amongst our pupils!

We have been learning how to measure accurately to the nearest centimetre through a variety of activities.

As part of our learning about our locality we learnt about local rivers and streams.  We used the book ‘The Journey’ to help us understand how streams become oceans.  We designed and made our own boats and rafts to demonstrate this journey on a story mat.

Throughout the term we will be focusing on the different ways that we can help to look after our town and our countryside, which will help us to look after our world.

After finding out about the different ways that we could help, we worked together to create a list of things that we and others could do.

To help look after our local wildlife, we will be making bird feeders to ensure that the birds have plenty of energy in the cold winter months. In order to take part in the Big School’s Birdwatch we also took part in a virtual event to find out what we needed to do.

Our topic this term is

’You are never too small to make a difference’

Throughout the term we will be focusing on the different ways that we can help to look after the our town and our countryside, which will help us to ‘look after our world’.

After finding out about the different ways that we could help, we worked together to create a list of things that we and others could do.

We went for a lovely winter walk around the school grounds. It was a beautiful frosty day!
We talked about all the wonderful things that we could see along the way.

We joined a virtual event as part of the RSBP Big School’s Birdwatch to find out we could join in with the big Birdwatch.

Then went for another walk to find out where the best place would be to do our Birdwatch. We wondered why there were not many birds…then we found out why! We realised that we needed to take better care of the birds this winter (a job for next week).

In maths we have been practicing ordering, counting and forming our numbers correctly.

In Welsh, we have been learning about the weather. We made our own audio books so that we could practice at home too. Click on the links to hear.

Brecon Nativity Trail

12 Dec 2023

I'm writing on behalf of the Churches in Brecon. You may already have heard but this year the churches in Brecon have set up a Nativity Trail around the town. Hidden in shop and business window displays are 19 characters associated with the Nativity Story. The idea is that children (with their parents) can wander around Brecon and when they spot a character they can scan the QR code which will take them to a page on the Kensington Baptist Church website. There they will find out a bit more about each character and the role they play in the Christmas narrative. They will also be able to access a Christmas craft to do at home which relates to each character!

Characters are going to be in the windows until Christmas Day but the closing date to win a prize for finding all 19 characters remains open until 1st January 2024.

I attach a poster, should you wish to pop one up in school or maybe send out to parents and a participation form that children can fill in should they decide to take on the challenge.

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy and blessed Christmas. Anna Bessant and I will be in touch again very soon to share with you exciting news about the Live Nativity taking place on Christmas Eve, with real camels!

Thank you again and God bless

Christmas concert

06 Dec 2023

FERNS For our Christmas Concert this year, we are 'townsfolk/innkeepers'. Could you please provide a long sleeved black/navy/dark top and bottoms (eg. leggings or trousers or joggers) for your child to wear under their tabard.
Children can wear these to school on Friday as we will be making sure all costumes are complete. These dark clothes will be needed on Tuesday for the afternoon performance and again for the evening.
If you would prefer to send them in a named carry bag to keep in school you are more than welcome.
Thank you for your support.

We are collecting batteries!

05 Dec 2023

Primary school pupils in Powys could win a share of £500 worth of vouchers for their school if they recycle as many batteries as they can.

Powys County Council is running a free battery recycling competition and is urging primary schools to sign up to be in with a chance of winning a share of £500 worth of Amazon vouchers. The first placed school collecting the most batteries will win a £300 voucher, with the schools in second and third place claiming a £150 and a £50 voucher respectively.

The competition is being sponsored by the European Recycling Platform, the council’s compliance scheme for waste electrical and electronic equipment and batteries. Primary schools who sign up will be provided with a free battery box and will compete from the beginning of December until the end of the school year (19 July 2024) to collect as many domestic batteries as possible.

This includes the standard AA and AAA nickel cadmium batteries, button cell batteries, power packs from tools and mobile phone and laptop batteries.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “This competition not only gives schools the chance to win some vouchers, but it also encourages their pupils and their families to recycle their batteries. I would urge every school in the county to sign up and take part. “Batteries are made from recyclable metals including lead, cadmium, zinc, lithium and mercury. Each battery collected by a school will be taken apart and the recovered materials used to make new batteries and other items, rather than being lost forever. “Teaching our future generations about the importance of recycling is a really important job. Participating schools will be instilling good recycling behaviours messages to the pupils and helping their communities cut carbon emissions, boost recycling rates, and inspiring everyone to recycle more.”

The Three little pigs

26 Nov 2023

We started the week off by visiting Forest School. A lot of team work was carried out to make a stick house for a pig to live in. Some houses also fitted the children in.

Since the start of term Dosbarth Fern  have been observing the changes with the trees. Last week we noticed that so many leaves have now fallen to the ground.

We played 'What's the time Mr Wolf?' We used lots of Welsh vocabulary.

Carol from Designed to smile came to show us how to brush our teeth.

We really enjoyed the visit from a real author, Tessa Gearing. This inspired us to write our own stories about the three little pigs. We have worked so hard writing our stories but they are not finished yet as the children did not want to stop until they reached the end. We will be finishing them off this week and look forward to sharing the amazing writing with you.

During PE we went to a building site. We worked with a partner to make a dance based on building houses.

Last week we explored the materials that the little pigs used to build their houses, before taking part in our own investigation where we have to create our own house. We thought carefully about the materials that we would use, built and tested them to see if the wolf could ‘huff and puff’ and blow our houses down.

Dosbarth Brambles

26 Nov 2023

We have been continuing our learning around the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’.

After exploring colour and colour mixing we followed instructions to draw a pig and practiced painting inside the lines.

We created our own puppet show using welsh sentence patterns that we had been practicing.

We thought carefully about the materials that we would use, built and tested them to see if the wolf could ‘huff and puff’ and blow our houses down.

We have also been taking part in a few important events recently. We gained an understanding of ‘Remebrance Day’ and had fun raising money for ‘Children in Need’.

We have been designing bug hotels.  First we wrote lists of what we would need, then we collected what we needed from the grounds.  Finally we created a little room each in the bug hotel that Mrs Thomas’ dad kindly made for us.

We learnt about the festival of Diwali from our friends and from our own research.  Here are some pictures of our creative work.

23 Nov 2023

We were very fortunate to have the author ‘Tessa Gearing’ visit Mount Street Infants. She has written the book ‘There’s an Alien in my lunchbox!’ This visit was organised by Book-ish in Crickhowell. The children enjoyed singing songs, listening to Tessa read the book and carrying out a quiz.

As part of the visit, the hardback book can be purchased for £12. If you wish to buy a book, please fill in the order form and send cash or a cheque (made payable to Book-ish) into school in an envelope by Monday 4th December. Tessa Gearing will come back and sign any books bought from Book-ish.

Order forms will be sent home with your child tomorrow.

We have been continuing or learning through the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ this week.

We began by retelling the story using Makaton, before using dance to act out the story.

We had fun exploring ‘colour mixing’ before mixing the correct colour to paint our pigs.

We explored the materials that the little pigs used to build their houses too. We concluded that bricks really were the best materials for a house.

We even designed our own houses for the pigs too.

In maths we have been learning our number bonds.

On Friday we had a fantastic day raising money for ‘Children in Need’.

13 Nov 2023

We began our week by reading the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’.
At Forest School, we made pigs out of natural materials, before working together to create a giant character from the story. We voted to see which character was the most popular.

We used the numicon to create houses for the pigs. By ordering the numicon tiles, we noticed that the ‘houses’ got bigger and bigger, and that the number of ‘windows’ got greater.

We practiced our welsh too, by creating our very own puppet shows.

We have also been finding out about other cultures, festivals and celebrations this week.

Hedgehogs and more

01 Nov 2023

Last week we were learning all about hedgehogs.

We began by working in teams to create our own digital information book. We learned how to find an image and upload it to our book and how to record our voices.

We practiced the art of folding paper to make a fan in order to make our cute hedgehogs.

We had a visit from PC Beaton too, who came to remind us how to stay safe during Halloween and on Bonfire Night.

This was a perfect time to have a fire at Forest School!
We practiced staying safe as we toasted yummy marshmallows on the fire.

We even made a giant ‘leafy’ Catherine Wheel on the field too.

We watched videos of real firework displays. Year 1 children wrote poems using their senses to help. We also made our own colourful firework display by using scarves.

We enjoyed staying late for a movie night on Wednesday. A huge thank you to the PTA for organising it.

We made lots of repeated patterns using natural materials.

This term we have also been practicing our music and movement skills. We have been developing our dance skills and our awareness of rhythm and pulse in music.

During ‘Amser enfys’ we carry out activities to improve our fine and gross motor skills.

We hope everyone is having a restful half term holiday and we look forward to seeing you next Monday.

16th-20th October 2023

21 Oct 2023

We have been very busy in school finding more out about Autumn. We read the story ‘Ouch!’ in Forest school and worked as a team to make a large hedgehog.

We learnt how to sign the word hedgehog using Makaton. Click on the link to learn how to sign hedgehog https://youtu.be/a1chR7Pic7o
During Forest School we also collected sticks to make our own clay hedgehogs back in class.

We watched a video on how to draw a hedgehog. The children concentrated and drew some brilliant hedgehogs. If you would like to draw hedgehogs at home here is the video we watched. https://youtu.be/oPm27Wq9nQk

It was wonderful that so many parents/grandparents/friends were able to join us for our Harvest festival.

We have also been learning how to measure in different ways this week. Some of us used non-standard units such as cubes to measure length and some measured using a ruler.
We felt the weight of different objects and made predictions. We then used a scale to see if we were correct.

We also had a visit from Lynsey who is a specialist teacher of hearing impairment for Powys County Council. She read a story to the whole school and spoke about rules we should follow when speaking to someone who is deaf.

Dosbarth Fern

08 Oct 2023

We have been busy using our senses again this week.

On Monday we went to forest school. We played 'Go find it'. The children had to use their sense of sight to find something thin, yellow, long etc. We then used our sight to follow a ribbon around trees. We found this easy as we could see where we were going. We then worked with a partner as one of us wore a blindfold. We had lost our sense of sight but had to listen carefully to our partner. It was a lot harder to go around the trail without being able to see.

We all looked at our eyes and noticed how we all have different eyes. Some are different sizes, shapes and colours. We then used different media to create our eyes- paint, oil pastels, rice etc.

Thank you to all those who sent us photos of shapes they found at home. The children enjoyed sharing these with the class. We then followed this up by going on a shape hunt around our school. Shapes are everywhere.

We then challenged the children to remember where they had seen their 2d shapes. After finding their shape, they practiced taking accurate photos on the iPad.

We even had hidden shapes to find in our maths books. The only way we could find them was to use a UV torch.

We were very lucky to have two visitors this week too.  Specsavers came to visit us. They spoke about eye tests and they also brought us glasses to try on. These were special glasses as they showed us how different people may see. Martha Rees, a sensory support teacher came to tell us all about sight. We took part in lots of activities to help us understand what is is like to have a sight impairment. We even found out how people can see supported with special devices and braille for reading.

In welsh, we learned the names of our the sensory parts of our face. We then listened carefully to the instructions to draw our faces.

All About Me

02 Oct 2023

'All About Me'

We have really enjoyed finding out about each other over the past few weeks.

We began by looking closely at ourselves and our own features.

We spent time talking about our emotions. We used the 'Colour Monster' to describe how we were feeling.

We have begun to think about our senses too.

We have taken part in lots of activities to help us with our 'sense of hearing'.

We have also enjoyed taking part in lots of activities to explore our 'sense of smell' too.

We had so much fun finding out about our 'sense of taste'.

It was also fun to taste all those 'yummy' cakes at the 'MacMillan Coffee Morning'.

Thankyou to all of you that were able to join us.

This week we will be continuing our 'senses' activities, and looking closely at our 'sense of sight'.

Fun at Dosbarth Bluebell

29 Sep 2023

We had a lovely afternoon blackberry picking in the community.  We picked enough to be able to make a delicious blackberry and apple (from our school grounds!) crumble.  Everybody had an important role to play, from chopping to mixing to serving.  Most children thought the crumble was delicious!  It was great to see so many trying new flavours.

Zoe from Impello Dance has been to visit us.  We had a great afternoon exploring different moves and balances.  Zoe will be visiting us more over the half term.

Lyndsey is a Specialist Teacher for the Deaf, she came into class to teach us skills to make our speech clear.  We learnt to always look at people when we talk to them, to speak clearly and not mumble and to not cover our mouths when we speak.  She taught us this through the story ‘Freddie and the Fairy’.

We have been exploring our facial features in the mirror and drawing self portraits.  We have been celebrating our similarities and differences and what makes us unique.

Activities this week

29 Sep 2023

Continuing our ladybird topic work this week, pupils have made ladybird hotels in Forest School for the ladybirds to hibernate in during the winter months. Pupils have enjoyed reading facts and information sheets to further their knowledge about ladybirds.

We learned so much about these animals and we even got to touch them too.

We had some very special visitors today!  Shauna from Animal Encounters brought along some very well behaved animals.  We learnt so much about them and got to have a stroke of them if we wanted to.

Fun at Dosbarth Bluebell

14 Jul 2023

We have been enjoying learning about the lifecycle of the butterfly.  We watched this process happen with our very own caterpillars.  We were proud to have taken such good care of them that all 5 caterpillars made the successful journey to becoming a beautiful painted lady butterfly.  We released them into the school grounds so that they can continue the life cycle.

We have been learning about measure too and have been finding ways to measure the height and circumference of various trees in our grounds.  We had to estimate first then work as a team to get an accurate measure.

Lots of fun at Smarties!

What better way to begin our week!

When we entered Forest School on Monday we could hear calming music being played. We closed our eyes and listened to the world around us. We took off our wellies and socks and walked around the woodland. We could feel the ground beneath us. We walked onto the field. The grass felt very soft and very different to the woodland floor. We picked daisies between our toes and relaxed and looked up at the clouds. When we returned to the woods we put our socks and wellies back on, then used our sense of sight to look around the woods using different objects such as netting, coloured plastic, cones etc. This made us really focus on what we were looking at and how using different materials can make us see the world differently.

Feeling calm and relaxed, we were ready for the week ahead.
We were all very enthusiastic to start our ‘growing’ topic. We read the story ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and talked about our likes and dislikes.

We even had a go at making a plate of very healthy vegetables.

We were very excited to hear that we were going to watch a puppet show.  Puppet Wales came to perform ‘Mary’s Garden’. We followed the story of the caterpillar, met all of her friends and then watched her turn into a butterfly. We learnt how important it is to look after the minibeasts in our garden.

We were then inspired to do a little planting ourselves. Thanks to all the wonderful donations we received this week, we had many plants, seeds and pots to begin creating our very own ‘Anywhere Farm’. We found out what plants needs to grow, and began the task of planting and caring for them, in order that we can watch them grow over the coming weeks.

To end our very busy week we were excited to hear that there was a ‘real live snake’ in school. We even found out how snakes grow too by shedding their skin.

What a busy week!
We were great story tellers this week. We practiced using our story telling voices to retell the story of ‘The Billy Goats Gruff’ to an audience.

We continued with our time telling this week too. We had great fun playing ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’ on the field, and even made giant clocks with our bodies.

We even did a bit of problem solving. We worked out how to get the ‘rugged bot’ across the bridge that we had made. The wood was too ‘smooth’ and so we predicted which material would give it enough traction to move up and over the bridge.

We completed our paper plate ‘anifailiaid’.

We even had time to have fun with a few visitors this week. ‘Upbeat Dave’ came to do a Samba Workshop with us. We practiced rhythm and tempo as we played along on our drums. We had a procession at the end of the day too. It was amazing!

We had great fun with Gruff too, who came to play welsh playground games with us.

Our final visitors of the week were two very cute chicks 🐥 Dosbarth Heather have been carefully looking after eggs in their incubator, and look what hatched out!

Have a fantastic break everyone. Well done for working so hard this term.

Home-Start Cymru

22 May 2023

Home-Start Cymru offers free, confidential support and practical help to parents of young children living across Wales who are going through a difficult time.
Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be very difficult, especially when children are young. Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life, particularly if they have little support from family and friends when they need it most.
For some parents it’s a struggle because they are also having to cope with issues such as peri-natal depression, their or their child’s illness or disability, isolation or multiple birth.
Home-Start Cymru provides support to families across Wales, with locally funded projects running in Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire, Gwent, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Merthyr , Powys,Gwynedd and Ynys Mon, and national projects operating in all areas.

Please get in contact with us if you have any questions or queries

21 May 2023

After returning from our wonderful trip to the farm we were inspired to find out a little more about goats. We had fun listening to the story ‘The Billy Goats Gruff’ then practiced retelling the story with our friends in the woods.

We even had time for a little balancing on the way back to school.

We decided to add sound to the story to make it more interesting. We listened to the sounds that each instrument made, then chose the best sound to add to each part of the story.

We think we saw the troll by the bridge on our way to the swimming pool!
We decided to make some ‘Wanted’ posters to see if anyone would help us catch that nasty troll.

We have been finding out all about time. We began finding out what we know about time.

We sequenced our day from morning to night, before moving on to think about units of time. We now know that a minute is longer than a second, and an hour is longer than a minute. We had fun finding out what we could actually do in one minute.

We then moved on to clocks. We looked at what we could see on a clock and even made our own. We then practiced making ‘o’clock’ times on our clocks.

Dosbarth Fern have been challenged to see if they can find ‘o’clock’ times both in school and at home. If you find an ‘o’clock’ time at home, why not take a photo and send it into school, and we will see if we can guess the time on your clock.

You can send your photo to learning@mountstreeti.powys.sch.uk

Coronation Talent Show

06 May 2023

Dosbarth Fern

06 May 2023

What a busy week!

We began our week with a fantastic day out at the ‘Small Breeds Farm’ in Kington. Everyone had their very own favourite part of the day, from the bus ride, seeing the owls, feeding the goats or enjoying a picnic lunch with their friends.

Back in school, we took part in a fun cricket session.

To complete our fun packed week we took part in a fantastic ‘coronation’ event. We were all invited to create a performance that was ‘fit for a king’, which we performed to our friends in a fantastic ‘Coronation Concert’. We even had our very own ‘Talent Show’ too where we had so much fun watching a range of acts from magicians, dancers, singers and joke tellers. Mrs Kenchington couldn’t pick a winning act as they were all so amazing and so decided to treat everyone to a well deserved ice lolly.

To complete our royal event, we thought it fitting to write a letter to the King himself, to wish him well on his special day.

Dosbarth Bluebell’s learning.

04 May 2023

We have been celebrating The Month of the Military Child throughout April.  We have spoken about what being a Military Child brings to our lives and how it makes us who we are.  We have discussed how this makes our school so special and how we are all a part of it.

We have continued learning about farming, we explored a ram’s fleece.  We described how it feels, smells and looks and how it protects the ram/sheep.   Then we went back to class and discussed the properties of other materials and how they serve a purpose in the world around us.

We were visited by some very talented young musicians from The Royal College of Music and Drama.  It was so interesting to learn more about the instruments they  played and how their musical careers begun.  Hopefully we have some budding musicians within Dosbarth Bluebell!

A great day was had by all at The Small Breeds Farm!  We met many different animals, large and small and even got to stroke and cwtch some.  As ever, the children were a credit to the school and were the beautiful, polite, well mannered and fun children that we have the pleasure of sharing each day with. Diolch Dosbarth Bluebell 😊

😋 picnic time at the farm

02 May 2023

17th-23rd April 2023

30 Apr 2023

To start off our week a parent from our class came to talk to us about his job. We found out so much about military life. We were able to try on a head set which sounded very funny. Miss Richards tried on some uniform. She said it felt very heavy and she didn't even have everything on!
A huge thank you for coming in to chat to us and for answering all of Dosbarth Fern’s questions.

We were very proud to help raise money for the ‘Little Troopers’ charity this week. We helped make cakes for the cake sale before choosing from all the delicious cakes on offer.

We were also very proud of one of our friends this week who has been taking part in the Nepali Workshops.

We were very lucky to be visited by three music students from Cardiff. They played us a variety of pieces of music. Some of the music was from Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and even ‘We don’t talk about Bruno’ from Disney’s Encanto.

We have been busy finding out all about King Charles this week. Did you know that King Charles eats healthy food. He has two rescue dogs, Beth and Bluebell and loves nature.

We looked closely at the ‘Coronation Emblem’ and the flowers that represent all four countries of Great Britain. We even made our very own ‘keepsake’ to remind us of this very special occasion.

We even carried out a maths investigation to see how many different ways we could make a number by using two numicon pieces.
